Construction is well underway for the Hainan Science Museum in China, a project that effortlessly blends contemporary design with its natural environment. Situated in Haikou City, Hainan Province, the museum's design phase began in 2020. Building work commenced in November 2021, with the main structure completed in June 2023. The museum is set to welcome its first visitors in 2025.
Spanning a construction area of 46,000 square meters, the Hainan Science Museum boasts a biomorphic form with fluid, soft shapes, reminiscent of an "updraft". The innovative design draws inspiration from the upward drift of warm air, aiming to strike a balance with the local environment. The museum's curtain wall, constructed from 843 pieces of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP), is built to endure Hainan's tropical climate. It features open seams and water-guiding grooves for efficient drainage, ensuring the structure's durability and functionality, even in a humid environment.
The museum’s layout is meticulously planned to make the most of space and materials. The core, floor plates, and main structure are directly tied to the curved facade, resulting in a more resourceful use of materials. The structure includes five above-ground floors and one underground level, with separate areas for different age groups. Younger children have dedicated spaces on the second and third floors, while older kids and adults begin their journey on the sixth floor, descending through the exhibition spaces.
Located in a new district of the Free-Trade Port in Haikou City, the museum is surrounded by existing wetlands and fresh developments. The design seeks to fuse the building's tropical context with its urban environment, fostering a union of technology and nature. Sunken plazas and wetlands envelop the building, creating interactive public spaces for learning and relaxation.
The firm behind this innovative design, MAD Architects, is renowned for their ground-breaking designs. They have recently shared their plans for the Cloud 9 Sports Center in Shijiazhuang, China, featuring a fluid exterior aimed at enhancing its connection with the surrounding park.
The Hainan Science Museum not only serves as an educational space but also provides a glimpse into the future, by incorporating nature into its design. As stated by MAD founder Ma Yansong, "A science museum is about education and imagining the future; we want nature to be part of that vision as well."
With its unique design and amalgamation of technology and nature, the Hainan Science Museum is poised to become a celebrated cultural destination in China. As construction proceeds, visitors can eagerly anticipate a museum experience that educates, inspires, and captivates with its innovative architectural design.
