Romania's parliament has given the green light to the culling of almost 500 bears this year in response to a purported "overpopulation" of the protected species. This move follows a tragic episode in which a 19-year-old hiker was fatally mauled by a bear in the Carpathian mountains, triggering a nationwide outcry. Romania boasts the largest brown bear population in Europe outside of Russia, with around 8,000 bears. Over the last two decades, bears have claimed 26 lives and seriously injured 274 others in the country.
